Biomedical Systems Appoints Chief Medical Officer
St. Louis, Mo. (Sept. 6, 2012) - Biomedical Systems, a global provider of digital medical imaging technologies and centralized diagnostic services, has named
Joseph A. Pierro, M.D., its chief medical officer for Biomedical’s North American operations.
In his role, Dr. Pierro and his team will advise clients on their clinical trial protocols, supporting studies conducted in the fields of cardiology, oncology, imaging and pulmonology. Dr. Pierro’s experience includes medical and scientific positions with leading pharmaceutical companies. He offers 19 years of global clinical research and drug development efforts working with both the pharmaceutical industry and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He has authored clinical protocols, study reports and regulatory submissions; taken compounds from the pre-IND stage through regulatory approval and launch; and managed interactions with U.S. and European regulatory authorities through his prior work experiences with the FDA at its Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Covidien/Mallinckrodt and Nycomed/Amersham Health/GE Healthcare.

Dr. Pierro will support Biomedical’s cardiology division while leading its scientific affairs department comprised of doctors, including cardiologist Pierre Maison-Blanche, M.D., and electrophysiologist Tim Callahan, Ph.D.; a medical writer; and scientific affairs project manager. He will provide strategic leadership and management over the department’s work, which includes consulting; protocol development; clinical trial oversight; data review and expert report generation, in consultation with sponsors pre-clinical study drug assessment and recommendations on specified diagnostic services; statistical analyses; and regulatory agency guidance. Dr Pierro will also help develop a global network of clinical experts and strategic relationships with key opinion leaders and universities.
Dr. Pierro earned his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and completed his Diagnostic Radiology Residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical System in Youngstown, Ohio.
