Dogport Closing Due to Safety Concerns

Dogport will be closed because of the McKelvey Woods Trail/McKelvey Woods Court construction, city officials say.

Starting Nov. 26, Dogport will be closed due to the McKelvey Woods Trail/McKelvey Woods Court construction.

The project includes the creation of a 3,900-foot out-and-back paved hiking/biking trail, the reconstruction of McKelvey Woods Court with concrete street and sidewalk and the addition of eight parking spaces to the Dogport lot. It is expected to be completed in spring 2013.

"To ensure the safety of Dogport patrons, we have decided to close the park for the duration of construction," Director of Parks and Recreation Mary Vaughan said. "We are sorry to inconvenience our members, but we think everyone will enjoy the expanded lot and improved road once they are finished."

Because the park will be closed for several months during construction, Dogport members will receive a 50 percent credit on their 2013 membership fee.

The city will provide regular updates on construction and anticipated reopening dates on the website.
