Homeowners, Residents File Lawsuit Concerning Bridgeton Landfill
A group of residents who live near the landfill are taking action for the site that has caused a strong odor recently.

Bridgeton residents have decided to elevate their concerns of a nearby landfill into legal action.
Tuesday, a group of Bridgeton homeowners and residents filed a lawsuit against Republic Services, Allied Services and Bridgeton Landfill for damages in the result of a “putrid smell caused by a subsurface-smoldering event or underground fire.” The Simmons firm is handling the case on behalf of the group.
“The heart of this case is that innocent homeowners are being deprived of clean, fresh air. This awful smell is a sign of a deeper problem that needs to be addressed. Residents should be able to live in their homes without concern that the noxious odors they are breathing might be harmful to their health,” Simmons Firm Shareholder Ted Gianaris, who leads the firm’s efforts on behalf of residents, said in a news release.
Last month, concerns rose among residents that there was a foul stench coming from the Bridgeton Landfill. According to a report by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the smell is not toxic or dangerous.
According to a news release, the odor has been so strong at times that residents were not able to go outside for certain period of times, and they have suffered discomfort and distress. The release also cites the odor as a source of decreasing property values in the area.
The Bridgeton Sanitary Landfill is located at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Interstate 270 on St. Charles Rock Road in north St. Louis County. It is separate from the West Lake Landfill.
