Swimmers Off Starting Blocks Capture Gold in Olympian Photo Contest

This eye-catching shot grabbed more than half of reader votes in our "Be an Olympian" photo contest, which was inspired by the London 2012 Olympics.

The judges have spoken in our "Be an Olympian" photo contest and the gold medal goes to this photo submitted by Earl Higgins.

Ten photos made it to the final round of judging, and readers picked the winner by casting their votes by leaving comments. This photo snagged 38 out of 63 total votes.

Patchers praised the photo for its color, composition, symmetry and ability to capture the spirit of Olympic competition.

Higgins will receive a $50 gift card or a prize package of equal or greater value for submitting the photo. Thank you to everyone who submitted photos and voted!

Thanks for the votes and the nice words about the picture, and thanks to all the other participants and their pictures! There were many good ones, it's a real honor to be considered the best.

To be clear, I uploaded the picture on behalf of my brother Bill who is the photographer. The diver closest to the camera is his daughter Eve, who has been swimming competitively since elementary school and is starting college this year in Arizona.
