Tomatoes, Zucchini and Squash—Oh My: Harrah's Plants Its 2012 Garden

Harrah's Casino staff members worked to plant its vegetable garden on April 18.

The Kelly English Steakhouse will have some homegrown tomatoes this spring—quite literally. Staff members from every corner of Harrah's Casino helped to plant the 2012 garden on Wednesday.

This is the second year Harrah's has planted a garden, said Stephanie Richter. Richter is Harrah's Director of Hospitality and took the helm of Wednesday's gardening.

Harrah's 2012 crop is set to be a little different than 2011. Richter said the peppers staff members planted last year didn't work as well as they would have liked.

"The peppers were a challenge last year," Richter said.

This year garden volunteers planted more tomatoes, which chefs at the Kelly English Steakhouse will use for their dishes. They also planted zucchini, squash, cucumbers and herbs.

Harrah's gardening volunteers came from every area of the casino—from table game operators and executives to human resource staffers cooks.

When I was younger I loathed gardening, despite my parents growing tomatoes and zucchinis. Now I'm starting to see the appeal--wouldn't mind trying to grow some herbs :)
