Share Memories of Sendak's 'Where the Wild Things Are'

Sendak has died at age 83. Tell us your memories of reading his books—especially "Where the Wild Things Are."

My two children are well above the age when they'd sit still for their mother and father reading a book to them. It won't be that many years before they have their own children. They'll be doing the reading. And I have no doubt that Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" will be among the books they crack open and recite. On Tuesday, we learned that the author of perhaps one of the most famous children's books of all time had died at the age of 83. The New York Times' report said the author had died from complications after a recent stroke. Writers have lauded Sendak's worth, but in particular his ability to craft children's stories out of what might have been considered "untraditional" — monsters "roaring their terrible roars" and "…

Loved to use this story in my KG classroom over the years; the children loved the idea of monsters who were manageable and fun:-) We also loved "Chicken Soup With Rice" and "Pierre." I remember I had the books AND the recordings to go with--we'd sing and sing!   more ›

Open Mic Night at Funny Bone Is No Laughing Matter For Some

Every Tuesday night at the Funny Bone, folks clamor for the chance to get laughs.

For some, Tuesday Open Mic Night at the Funny Bone in Westport Plaza is no laughing matter.  Tuesday night, 45 people signed up for the chance to hit the stage and entertain the crowd of more than 200 at the comedy club. Each week, organizers hold a brief meeting at 7:45 p.m. in a room on the other side of the stage. The dimly lit room was packed with an unusually large number of hopeful prospects (generally anywhere between 30-50 show up every week), all giving their undivided attention to comic and regular Funny Bone master of ceremonies Sean O'Brien as he addressed the rules. The rules, though basic, are not to be taken lightly. Each comic gets four minutes. Everyone is expected to shake the emcee's hand when welcomed to the stage—sort …

And, Action! Parkway North & Ladue Grads Behind New Film

'Welcome To Shirley' made its world debut Tuesday night.

Some young filmmakers with ties to the Creve Coeur area probably did what anyone in show business would love to do Tuesday night: celebrate a sold out crowd at a world premiere. Welcome To Shirley, which, according to the film's website, "addresses and satirizes the quirkiness of the family unit, as well as the small-town environment, but on a deeper level it confronts complex ideas of bereavement, familial rivalry, and how hard it can be to stay together as things are falling apart," hit the big screen for the first time Tuesday at the Tivoli Theatre in University City. The film is the work of Joe Weil and Blake Lawrence (Ladue Horton Watkins High School graduates), and Paul Brick (Parkway North graduate), among others, and was shot and …

Slow Restaurant Business Hurts Local Musicians

After the holidays when business for area bars and restaurants drops off musicians must find a Plan B.

The winter months after the holidays can be a brutal season for businesses and local musicians are not immune to the effects of the declining economy during this time period. Three's A Crowd, an acoustic trio, has been performing at the Trainwreck Saloon in Westport Plaza every Tuesday for at least the past three years. But Tuesday night was the trio's last performance for the next two months. In the meantime, the members of the group, Selena Robertson of Leadwood, Scott Mayhood of St. Louis and Buddy Mueller of Troy, will have to find another way to make ends meet. "Every place cuts back," said Trainwreck manager Audra Burkhardt. "That's the only reason why Three's A Crowd is taking off. But they will be back." January and February are …

Volunteers Needed for International Festival

Start the new year by volunteering at the 11th annual International Festival.

Following the Fiddler: Pattonville Teen Gets New Kicks Playing Old Time Music

Roger Netherton, a Pattonville junior, has won some prestigious awards for playing his 'Frankenstein' of a fiddle.

The 15-year-old was jamming with other musicians at a music festival, when a stranger carrying an old fiddle approached his mother, Robin Netherton. “He said, ‘I got this at auction and came here to sell it, but I heard your kid play and I want him to have it.’ He stuck it in my hands and vanished,” said Robin, of Creve Coeur. “He didn’t care that I didn’t even know who he was." Roger, a junior at Pattonville High School, has been playing fiddle barely four years, but people assume he's an old pro. “People all think he’s played since he was 6 or 7 years old,” Robin said. “I hear from the other fiddlers that he plays like a 70-year-old who’s been playing since he was a kid.” The teen plays a music style that was a forerunner to bluegrass. …

Pattonville High Students Illustrate City's Neediest

Artwork from Pattonville High School students is featured as part of the United Way 100 Neediest Families campaign.

Since 1922, St. Louisans have banded together to help local families in need during the holidays. For almost 60 years, that tradition continued as the United Way’s 100 Neediest Families campaign, profiling 100 families availible for adoption in the St. Louis area. Each case is profiled in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which has partnered with the program for more than 5 decades. Students from high schools across the city contributed artwork to the campaign, illustrating the despair and need of profiled families. Artwork from three Pattonville High School students—Kaylyn Williams, Maximilian Schnake and Matt Zehner—was selected from hundreds of entries to be featured alongside the campaign. Last year, contributors donated $1.3 million and …
