How Will Harrah's New Ownership Affect Local Gaming?

We want your opinion—how do you think Harrah's new ownership will affect the attractions at our local casino?

The Harrah’s Casino sale seems to benefit two casino companies in different ways, STL Today reported Monday. Caesars Entertainment needed a cash infusion, the newspaper said, while Penn National will have a larger share of the St. Louis Market. Penn National already owns the Argosy Casino Alton—making Penn and competitor company Pinnacle Entertainment as owners of two St. Louis area casinos, according to STL Today. But what do you think this means for Maryland Heights and St. Louis gaming in general? Do you expect the local gaming culture to become more homogenized? Or is the Argosy Alton so much fun it needs a sister casino locally? Be sure to let us know in the comments!

Great question, Melissa! Harrah's affected a lot of local funding, for both the city and the local school districts. We ran an article back in 2011 that delved a little bit into how Casino revenue affects local government and schools: http://marylandheights.patch.com/articles/st-charles-maryland-heights-prepare-for-loss-in-casino-revenue-2 But we'll check out how the casino's sale will affect the…   more ›

Do You Think Farmers' Markets Are 'Fresher'?

Local farmers’ market vendors say that the fruits and veggies they grow are superior to grocery store produce for many reasons.

Do you buy the freshest produce possible? According to many area farmers, the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store may not be as fresh as you think. With farmers' markets open now (or about to open) around the St. Louis area, including Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton, Ellisville, Wildwood, Arnold and elsewhere, we wanted to talk a little about what "fresh" means to you. Tim Hess, owner of Silent Oaks farm and a vendor at several area farmers’ markets, told Patch that most of the produce sold in local grocery stores comes from Calfornia or Florida, areas where many farms are staffed by migrant workers. “It’s a long trail and at the end of the trail you’ll find that migrant Mexican workers do …

The two greatest deterrents to lo locally grown produce and fruits are... 1. Convenience - everyone wants to have their needs met close to home, easily accessible and inexpensive 2. Instant Gratification - "I want it NOW, even though it is not in season I want it and should be able to have it!" Gone are the days of waiting for the peaches and tomatoes to ripen in the backyard! I personally would …   more ›

Admissions Drop for Maryland Heights Casino

Harrah's saw a decline in admission numbers in April 2012.

Numbers are dipping for Maryland Heights and St. Charles-based casinos. Maryland Heights Harrah’s Casino saw a year-over-year drop in admissions last month. The Missouri Gaming Commission indicates 600,357 were admitted into the casino in April 2012, while April 2011 saw 627,457 admitted. That’s a four percent decrease, according to the commission. How Will Harrah's Sale Affect Pattonville?

Pattonville CFO Ron Orr says its unclear how the casino's sale will affect Pattonville's bottom line.

The Pattonville School District could see an increase in revenue due to the sale of Harrah’s Casino. Ron Orr, Pattonville’s chief financial officer, said the $610 million sales tag is more than either the St. Louis County Assessor or the St. Louis County Board of Equalization valued the facility. Penn National bought the property for $108 million more than the county assessor estimated Harrah's was worth, and $395 million more than the County Board of Equalization estimated. The Board of Equalization valued Harrah’s at $215 million in September, while County Assessor Jake Zimmerman’s assessment was $502 million. But it’s still hard to predict what will happen, Orr said. Pattonville’s revenue is based on the combined property tax rates of …
