Big name bands came out to Maryland Heights May 19 and 20 for Pointfest in the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Musicians Rob Zombie and the band Megadeath headlined the event's first day. The Missouri Winefest kicked of Saturday at Westport Plaza with hundreds of people coming within the first hour. This year saw an uptick in the variety of wines availible for purchase, however one less winery participated in the event than in 2011. Kim Thorwegen, campaign coordinator for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said the event was competing with a grape and wine conference on the same weekend—also held in the St. Louis area. Maryland Heights Residents for Responsible Growth (MHRRG) and the Open Space Council held a trivia night to raise funds on Feb. 4. Organizers said 13 tables of eight people attended the event. Melissa Heberle of MHRRG emceed the evening's trivia. She said the event had ten rounds of general trivia. Questions included "What is the technical term for the clavical?" and "In what California city did the last Pony Express ride end?"

The band Three's a Crowd performed its final regular show at the Westport Plaza-based Trainwreck Saloon on Dec. 27. Maryland Heights Patch previously spoke with band members and venue managers about ending the regular show. The band will be back at the Trainwreck in two months, according to the article.
Pattonville Heights Middle School's sixth, seventh and eighth grade bands performed a concert Thursday. The three groups of musicians performed several pieces of music, ranging from holiday tunes to contemporary pieces.
The Maryland Heights Community Chorus held a holiday concert on Dec. 12, where the musical group sang songs from around the world. Their program included "Light the Candles," "All Through the Night" and "Gloria in D." The Chorus' music director is Amy Smith, the concert program indicated, and Shirley Foust accompanied on the piano. Percussionists Joe Eagan and Ethan McClain also accompanied, according to the program.
Parkway North High School celebrated homecoming this weekend. The festivities included a parade near Fee Fee Road.

The Maryland Heights Fire Distrcit held an open house on Oct. 8, where local residents could meet their firefighters and paramedics. The event featured games for the kids, a bounce castle and food. A press release indicated face painting, equipment demonstrations and guided tours through the station would also be availible. The event is set to run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Local legend The Urge made its return in grand style as it reunited for its first show since 2005 and delighted thousands in attendance at the 29th Pointfest held at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Maryland Heights. Announcing that the group is officially back and recording new material, Steve Ewing and company showcased a new track entitled "Say Yeah" and announced the band will be playing two nights at the Pageant in St. Louis on Nov. 11 and 12. The 29th Pointfest presented by 105.7 the Point also included performances by Bush, Cake, Chevelle, Middle Class Rut, Greek Fire.
Ten years ago, disbelief gave way to shock, fear, anger and rage as Americans watched on television as the terrorist attacks unfolded on Sept. 11, former Missouri Sen. John Danforth told a crowd at the Sheldon Concert Hall Sunday. Danforth spoke at the Interfaith Memorial in Music. It was hard to tell if the dogs or their owners were more excited, as about 200 dogs lined up Monday night at the entrance to the Maryland Heights Aquaport for their annual swim in the pool. As the last swimmers of the summer exited the pool, the dogs and their humans filed in. The dogs have the run of the place, except the kiddie pool is reserved for small dogs, and generally the bigger dogs like the lazy river. No dogs on slides, either. Spending most of 2011 on the road to promote Tha Carter IV which hits shelves August 29, Lil Wayne performed his second show in the St. Louis area in 2011, serving as headliner at Hot 104.1's Super Jam 5. The concert also featured performances by Rick Ross, Keri Hilson, Far East Movement and Lloyd.

For the past five summers, 40-foot long boats with a dragon head at the bow have raced 400 yards past the shore in Creve Coeur Park on a Saturday morning. Teams of 20 paddle the boats. It’s team-building, it’s fun and each team pays $1,000 to participate, with proceeds benefiting Operation Family Help—a Signature Healthcare Foundation initiative to assist families of patients with financial challenges. Support Dogs, Inc. held its 12th annual trivia night over the weekend. The group provides the service of its dogs free of charge. Each dog costs about $15,000 and takes 18 months to train. Last year’s trivia night brought in $21,000, and this year’s event was the biggest ever, with 60 tables of trivia buffs.Diane Bennish, from Ballwin, came with her bridge group, and she said the group members are not very good at trivia, but they eat well. “When the dogs put on their ‘capes,’ they know it’s not time to play. Up on the Pattonville High School band practice field, the marching Pirates learn the basics, in preparation for more intricate drills later on. Music director Denny McFarland has assistance teaching the steps from Pattonville high school and middle school staffers. This year’s music is by John Meehan, from the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, multiple-world championship winners. The music has never been played by a Missouri band. Vito Lucido, limited to a wheelchair to get around on land, gets across the surface of a lake much faster. He's been water skiing since 1998. He used to play wheelchair rugby and tennis, but he's 47 now, so skiing is his main thing— and helping others with disabilities ski, too. He and professional skier Kevin Day formed the Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association (MDWSA) in 2007. Now the group meets annually at Creve Coeur Lake with 25-40 disabled skiers, as well as lots of volunteers, for a day on the lake. Three ski boats pulled skiers on special $2,000 skis equipped with special seats. …
