Hundreds Turn Out for Geekway

The 2012 Geekway to the West board game convention got underway this weekend, and we've got the pictures.

The 2012 Geekway to the West board game convention at Westport Plaza's Sheraton got underway this weekend, and 350 attendees had come out by Saturday morning. Chris Darden and Jay Moore—two of the event's co-organizers—said people from accross the country had come out to Maryland Heights for the convention. Attendees from Florida, Texas, California and other states made it out this year, they said. The convention had swarms of walk-up attendees. Co-organizer Todd Reed said about 14 walk-ins had arrived Saturday morning, while 25 walk-ins came in on Friday. Check out photos from the 2011 Geekway to the West board game convention.

Traffic Ahead: MoDOT Reports Ongoing Closures Only, This Week

Missouri Department of Transportation reports no work zones for St. Louis County or Jefferson County for the week of May 17 to May 23.

Parkway Retirees Give Thousands in Scholarships

Three Parkway School District seniors received scholarships from the Parkway School District Retiree Association.

Two Parkway North High School students received $1,000 in scholarship funds from the Parkway School District Retiree Association. A press release from Parkway School District indicates recipients Lindsay Moshkowsky and Mary Wilsdon will attend the University of Missouri. A third student, Amber Hollowell, received a $3,000 scholarship from the association. She will attend St. Louis Community College at Meramec, the press release indicated. Hollowell gave a student address Friday at the Fern Ridge High School graduation.

PBS Focuses on Missouri's Payday Loan Initiative This Weekend

The national program airing Saturday and Sunday will focus on initiative petition campaigns tied to capping interest rates at 36 percent.

A Missouri ballot initiative aimed at curtailing interest rates at “payday loan” entities is getting some national attention. For an episode of PBS’s Need to Know, airing locally this weekend, the program traveled to the Show Me State to follow around activists who are collecting signatures for an initiative petition. If the ballot measure makes it to the ballot and if voters approve it, interest rates on certain lending companies would be capped at 36 percent. Supporters of the initiative argue that the loan agencies place poorer Missourians in a cycle of debt. But opponents counter that the entities are usually the only way lower-income citizens can obtain short-term loans to pay ordinary expenses. While supporters of the initiative …
