Former McKelvey Elementary Student and Maryland Heights Resident Dies at 18

Priscilla Guzman, who once lived in Maryland Heights, has died.

Priscilla Guzman, an 18 year-old Marine, has died. The Columbia Missourian reported March 6 that Guzman was a former resident of Maryland Heights, and attended McKelvey Elementary School as a child. Guzman's family moved to Columbia, MO. when she was in the seventh grade, the Missourian reported. The newspaper indicates burial services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles-based Oak Grove Cemetery.

Northwest Chamber of Commerce President Passes Away Suddenly

New president Robert Swank died Sunday afternoon from a heart attack.

Robert Swank has been a business leader in the Greater St. Louis area for some time serving communities all around the City of Florissant, from Ferguson to Wentzville and beyond. After recently being hired as president of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce (NWCC) in November, Swank passed away Sunday of a heart attack.  "It is with deep and great sorrow that I must inform you of the death of the NWCC President/CEO, Robert Swank," said Northwest Chamber of Commerce administrator Tina Herrmann in an email sent out to chamber members Monday evening. Updated: Planning Commission to Consider Controversial Maryland Pointe Proposal

Maryland Heights staff prepared a resolution that includes several conditions for the preliminary development plan for the Tuesday night meeting.

The Maryland Heights Planning Commission meeting likely will include a vote on the controversial Maryland Pointe development’s conceptual development plan Tuesday night at the Maryland Heights Government Center. During its Oct. 11 meeting, the commission asked staff members to draft a resolution that includes several conditions for the preliminary development plan, the next step in the process. The Maryland Pointe developers submitted a conceptual development plan for a mixed used development on 191 acres in the Howard Bend area. The site is just northwest of Creve Coeur Park, along Maryland Heights Expressway north of River Valley Drive. Parkwood Elementary Teacher Killed in Car Crash

A drunk driver traveling at 100 mph rear-ended the vehicle, killing two people and injuring five others.

A physical education teacher at Parkwood Elementary School was killed early Sunday morning in a car crash involving a driver who police said was driving under the influence of alcohol. Steve Brueggen, 38, was riding in the rear of a Chevrolet Tahoe with six other people on westbound Interstate 270 near West Florissant Road. A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Patrick D. Walsh, 20, of St. Charles, struck the Tahoe in the rear at about 1 a.m. Sunday. According to a report from KSDK, police estimated that Walsh was driving about 100 mph and had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit. The Tahoe flipped over several times, ejecting Brueggen and another man, Michael R. McLemore, 37, of O’Fallon, MO from the truck. Both were killed. …

Wheeler Services Set

Local jazz icon died last week in her Creve Coeur area home.

Local plans to honor Mae Wheeler, the jazz icon who died last week in her Creve Coeur area home, are coming together. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports a Jazz Wake will be held on Friday at Randle and Sons Funeral Home, with a wake and funeral services scheduled for Great Grace Church, 3690 Pershall Rd. on Sunday. The Post-Dispatch's Kevin Johnson also has information on a pair of concerts in Wheeler's honor.
