The City Council voted to authorize the mayor to enter into contracts for construction, painting and floor resurfacing at Aquaport.

The Maryland Heights City Council approved several items on March 15 aimed to renovate the Aquaport facility. The renovations include painting, interior floor resurfacing and the addition of 12 foot by 20 foot precast concrete building. The Council voted to authorize Mayor Mike Moeller to enter into contract with Bazan Painting on two items. Bazan Painting won the bid for painting and resurfacing services. According to a memorandum to Moeller from Parks and Recreation Director Mary Vaughan, Bazan Painting bid $85,130 for painting services. Wrap-up of Laws Passed in 2011 in Maryland Heights

This year, the city defined weapons and recovered from storms.

In 2011, the City of Maryland Heights passed 119 ordinances which is in keeping with the amount of ordinances passed in recent years. According to Emery Ransom, deputy city clerk for the City of Maryland Heights, while there weren’t many new laws added the city did amend Chapter 14 of the Municipal Code to define what a weapon is. “We modeled this law after the state since we didn’t have anything similar in our municipal code,” Ransom said. The new law includes definitions of everything from knives to firearms. In addition to the usual laws concerning defining subdivision plats and budget items, Ransom said there was a lot of activity for conditional use permits because of the Good Friday storms. And the city passed several ordinances for …

Dogs Take Over Aquaport

For almost 10 years, the final pool event of the year has been a two-hour swim for dogs and their humans.

It was hard to tell if the dogs or their owners were more excited, as about 200 dogs lined up Monday night at the entrance to the Maryland Heights Aquaport for their annual swim in the pool. As the last swimmers of the summer exited the pool, the dogs and their humans filed in. The dogs have the run of the place, except the kiddie pool is reserved for small dogs, and generally the bigger dogs like the lazy river. No dogs on slides, either. Some had been coming for years and other were first-timers. They have the pool for two hours, but most are tired and ready to go home after just one, the facilities manager, Eilien Ramirez said. Mary Vaughan, the Maryland Heights director of parks and recreation, said the dog swim has been going on for …

An alleged injury on a waterslide has landed the City of Maryland Heights in court.

An alleged injury at the Aquaport has landed the City of Maryland Heights in court. Gee Warren has filed a lawsuit against the city for a 2009 injury she says she sustained at Maryland Heights' waterpark. She seeks $25,000 to cover medical expenses and lost earnings as a result of the accident. Maryland Heights Parks Department Prepares Aquaport for Summer

Aquaport is undergoing a little spring cleaning before the water park opens on Memorial Day weekend.

Gearing up a public water park for visitors requires a lot more than just starting the hoses and turning on the lights. For Eilien Ramirez, pool season begins well before Memorial Day and well after Labor Day. The Parks and Recreation Department's recreation facility manager has begun the renovation and hiring process in anticipation of Aquaport's opening on May 28. "People think, 'What do you do in the off-season?'" Ramirez said. "But it never really stops." Located at 2344 McKelvey Rd., the facility includes a variety of water slides, a lazy river, a kids' area and, of course, the massive, 8,000-square-foot pool. Each year, Ramirez and other staff members conduct a fall walk-through once the season ends to determine what areas could use …
