Development near Creve Coeur Park Meets Opposition From Residents

"We’re destroying that which makes us special," opposition leader says. She takes a stand against the project, presenting petition with 3,000 signatures.

A standing room only crowd packed the Maryland Heights Government Center meeting room Tuesday to voice its opinions and hear the Maryland Pointe LLC group give its presentation on plans for a retail development in Howard Bend area. The Maryland Pointe development group has request to rezone a 191-acre area on both sides of Maryland Heights Expressway north of River Valley Drive in the Howard Bend area. The Maryland Heights Planning Commission held a public hearing on the issue Tuesday. Ten people who spoke during the public hearing opposed the Maryland Pointe LLC’s development west of Creve Coeur Park. Their comments were greeted by applause from the crowd of about 120 people. Audubon Society Uses Saws for a Cause

St. Louis Audubon Society volunteers spent a cool morning clearing brush from Creve Coeur Park as part of an ongoing habitat restoration project.

On Nov. 13, St. Louis Audubon Society volunteers spent a brisk Saturday morning sawing down beautiful bushes. Almost 100 acres of Creve Coeur Park is filled with Asian Honeysuckle. The Audobon Society's 30 volunteers sought to clear out one of the park's four-acre corners in one Saturday morning. Asian Honeysuckle isn't the familiar backyard vine sprinkled with flowers that have a sweet, edible nectar. Asian Honeysuckle is a tall bush with broad green leaves and attractive clusters of fire-engine-red berries. Their trunks can grow to be between two and four inches across. Mitch Leachman, executive director of the St. Louis Audubon Society, explained that Asian Honeysuckle is a classic example of a beautiful, useful plant that wrecks havoc …
