The construction will cause an increased odor and continue through the middle of June.
Updated as of 10:20 a.m. Construction has been halted at Bridgeton Landfill, which was set to begin Monday morning. Maryland Heights and other area residents are bracing themselves for increased odor during the construction period, but residents can expect more updates. The Bridgeton Landfill construction will take place May 20-June 14—dependent on weather--according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources website, and daily updates on construction and air monitoring will be posted on the site. Several residents near the landfill in Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home Park and some residences of the Carrollton Village Condominimums, were provided an opportunity to participate in a Temporary Housing Program during the …

Community members wanting more information about the situation in Bridgeton, that is also affecting neighboring communities, are asked to come out Thursday to Pattonville High School's cafeteria at 7 p.m.
A lot has happened in the past week with regards to the West Lake and Bridgeton landfills. In an effort to help people concerned about the situation and how it affects them digest all the information, a group of informed citizens is hosting an informational meeting. Since February, residents have complained of a foul odor being emitted from the landfill, which is caused by a smoldering event beneath the landfill. Since that time, the odor has worsened in part due to construction to eliminate the odor and contain the fire that has been monitored at the landfill site. Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster reached a preliminary agreement with Republic Services, the owner of Bridgeton and West Lake Landfill. It asks for the company to finish …

Although it's the first step in the process, residents and advocates see much work still left to be done for the public's knowledge.
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster reached a preliminary agreement with Republic Services, the owner of Bridgeton and West Lake Landfills, he said in a press conference Tuesday morning. The agreement asks for the company to finish construction work that would ultimately place a cap on the south quarry of Bridgeton Landfill by Labor Day, pending weather problems. It also calls for temporary relocation of residents of Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home Park and some residences of the Carrollton Village Condominimums and reimbursement of state agencies for ongoing monitoring and sampling efforts. The agreement responds to the immediate concerns regarding the odor of the landfill and its subsurface fire, Koster said. His office …

With stir of a possible settlement, Maryland Heights and Bridgeton residents press for representation in meetings of the landfill.
The Missouri Coalition for the Environment and residents of Maryland Heights and Bridgeton gathered Monday morning to press officials for more information on the Bridgeton and West Lake landfills. With more construction scheduled to start at the site May 20 and the Bridgeton Landfill odor expected to increase, residents and the coalition want more action from state agencies. Ed Smith, Safe Energy Director for the coalition, showed that Republic Services, owner of the landfills, only offers residents in Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home and some of Carrolton Village Condominiums an opportunity to relocate. Each of those are within a one-mile radius. Smith and others said the “stink zone” is much greater than one mile. “If Republic…

Some area residents are being offered a temporary housing alternative, while the community grows concerns about the landfill's odor.
As the Bridgeton Landfill prepares to have a higher odor level due to further construction, some residents surrounding the area are getting a temporary way out. Residents of Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home and some of Carrolton Village Condominiums have been offered a temporary alternative housing solution as the smell is expected to rise dramatically next week when more construction takes place. In a letter from Bridgeton Landfill President Tim Trost, the company offers a lodging program that will put up residents in an extended-stay hotel at the company’s expense for May 20 through June 14. Pets can be taken to some of the hotels, and pet fees would be covered. If a resident decides to go to a friend or relative’s home …

In the most recent update from Missouri Department on Natural Resources, the construction has stopped to allow for the maintenance of a gas extraction well.
Just as work on the Bridgeton Landfill began to make progress, it appears that it might have slowed just a bit. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources information page, Republic Services has halted work on six reinforced concrete pipes as of April 25. These pipes have caused the odors from the site to increase since construction started back in the middle of April. The pipes' construction are a part of a plan to cap the site. The company has been performing a daily maintenance on a gas extraction well and has posted daily alerts regarding the smells increase starting anywhere between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. (To check the daily alert times, check out the Missouri DNR website.) The department of natural resources has …

A circuit court of St. Louis County will hear evidence regarding Attorney General Chris Koster’s request for a preliminary injunction against Republic Services on May 14 and 15.
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster has requested court dates in his lawsuit against the owner of the Bridgeton Sanitary Landfill after he said it violated the state’s environmental protection laws, KMOV reports. The report said the Circuit Court of St. Louis County will hear evidence regarding Koster’s request for a preliminary injunction against Republic Services on May 14 and 15. The landfill has been a point of controversy for Bridgeton, Maryland Heights and the North County area for a strong odor coming from it, which has raised health concerns amongst residents. The installation of reinforced concrete pipes will create a strong odor during the construction this week.
Bridgeton-area residents and employees might smell a stronger stench in the area, and there’s a reason for it. This week, the Bridgeton Landfill will install reinforced concrete pipes, which will cause the stronger odor from the landfill, according to a Missouri Department of Natural Resources website. The construction, which will take place through the end of April depending on weather, is a step in the process to cap the quarry area. Republic Services, which owns this landfill as well as the West Lake Landfill, announced in January that the company had an interceptor plan, which would install gas wells to help with the subsurface heat and address the smells. Since that time, the company has gone through a number of steps involving …

The lawsuit comes one week after the Missouri Department of Natural Resources director requested legal action.

Koster brought charges against Republic Services, Allied Services and Bridgeton Landfill, which is located at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Interstate 270 on St. Charles Rock Road in north St. Louis County, for odors produced by a fire burning underground. “The nearby residents, schools, senior care facilities and a local hospital all have dealt with terrible, ongoing odor problems from the Bridgeton Landfill that have impacted their ability to go about normal activities,” Koster said in a press release. “For St. Louisans who have not been directly …
