As Gov. Jay Nixon and Sen. Claire McCaskill led a blue resurgence in a red state in 2012, some started mixing mentions of the Missouri governor with the year 2016. St. Louis Post Dispatch columnist Bill McClellan may have been among the first to suggest a Democratic Nixon taking run at White House. But national media have since picked up on the fact that Nixon, a Democrat, has turned up the ability to appeal to Republicans as part of this year's re-election effort, as chronicled by the Huffington Post. “I think if Gov. Nixon were to run for president in 2016, he would use the Bill Clinton model from 1992 and run as a centrist or moderate,” said David Kimball, professor of political science at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Democratic incumbent Clint Zweifel gave his acceptance speech just before midnight Tuesday, after a night of number watching in a close race with Republican challenger Cole McNary.
Democratic incumbent Clint Zweifel and Republican challenger Rep. Cole McNary faced off in the Nov. 6 election for the position of Missouri State Treasurer. As results came in Tuesday night, both candidates gathered with friends and family at St. Louis area watch parties. Initially, it was a tight race, but ultimately Zweifel declared victory and thanked his supporters just before midnight. "I think a lot of this illustrates hard work and investment in each other," Zweifel said. With 100 percent of the precincts counted early Wednesday morning, Zweifel had 50.3 percent of the vote and McNary had 45.5 percent of the vote. Zweifel tells Patch McNary did call him and concede Tuesday night. Both parties tell Patch they knew it would be a …

Late Friday night, a temporary budget deal was reached to avoid a shutdown of the federal government. Here's what Patch readers should know about a possible future shutdown.
Late Friday night CNN is reporting that Democratic and Republican negotiators reached a budget deal that will avoid a government shutdown. According to a CNN breaking news alert, House Speaker John Boehner said the House will pass a short-term measure that will keep the government funded through the middle of next week, when a longer-term package is expected to be enacted. However, U.S. Congressman Todd Akin's camp tells Patch that a short term solution is not the answer to solving the bigger issue of government overspending which could ultimately lead to the bankruptcy of the nation. Akin represents Missouri's second district, including Manchester and Town and Country, and is in Washington, D.C. working with the rest of congress on the …
