This month, the Geek Girl goes on a dangerous exploratory mission into the earliest known training grounds for gamblers: Dave and Buster's.
Flashing lights, simple controls, and the dead eyes of an electronically rendered woman have me constantly complaining that, these days, casino gambling feels more like visiting an arcade designed for the elderly and less like dressing up for a scene out of James Bond. While action-based video games aren’t devolving into the primitive 16-bit machines seen in the casino slots, an investigative mission to Dave and Buster's revealed the vast majority of the games that spat out prize tickets were training tools for future gamblers. You don’t win tickets playing Time Crisis. Wielding that pink gun is its own reward. I resisted the siren call of beloved games in order to complete my brave, exploratory mission into the kids' section of the arcade…

Our resident geek girl can’t figure out if she’s an extra in "Terminator" or "War Games" as she goes head to head with a talking video poker machine.
Everything is better with strippers. Well, maybe not everything. STI Tests might turn out better without their help. Oil prospecting with strippers would result in deeply unfortunate sunburns. Meterology with strippers has already been done in New Zealand. Even the gamblers at Harrah’s agreed that while poker with strippers was entertaining, you played a better game without them. That explains why there’s an entire massive suite dedicated to serious poker and only a small handful of four-player machines manned by dead-eyed electronic video stripper dealers. As a geek, I couldn’t resist. The combination of animation and video served up the best graphics in the house. I had to find out if the enticing “Come play with me,” purrs were the …

The Geek Girl tries to find a steampunky connection to Roulette.
Gambling seemed like it should be such an intuitive leap for a geek like me. After all, I own plenty of cards at home. Okay, they’re for Dominion, Bang, and because I’m a girl, Lost Cities. I also own plenty of dice at home. Alright, most of them have 20 sides, though in a pinch I can always whip out my iPhone DiceBag app if for some reason I need a four or eight sider. Even so, I failed dramatically at gambling with cards. Gambling with dice worked a little better. This week, in the spirit of steampunk, it was time for me to gamble with gears. I was ready to try Roulette. I left my brass goggles and astrolabe necklace at home in favor of a look that wouldn’t get me thrown out as a terrorist. Since I hadn’t seen any roulette tables at …

The Maryland Heights-based casino hopes to turn about 38 acres of its property into farm land as part of its “Code Green” initiative.
Harrah’s Casino is all about the green these days. It’s not just the color of cash anymore. The Maryland Heights casino has petitioned the Maryland Heights Planning Commission to plant crops like herbs and wheat in around 38 or 39 acres of its facility. An Attorney representing Harrah’s presented the casino’s case to the planning commission Feb. 8. He said the new farming plan would be part of Caesar Entertainment’s “Code Green” initiative — a plan aimed to make Harrah’s parent company more environmentally friendly. The plan has already helped Caesar’s reduce energy consumption, according to Caesar’s website. Among the highlights of “Code Green’s” accomplishments, Caesar’s boasts it has “reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 106,000 …

This week our geek girl decides to win some money by rolling 2d6.
Electronics and cards failed me. This week, it was time for me to embrace my geekiness and play a game using dice. Sure, I knew the casino used two six-sided dice, or as we nerds call them “2d6,” for some of its games. The casino probably wouldn’t let me put my lucky House of M Mystique HeroClix table on the board. And if I asked if the shooter was rolling to attack or defend, I’d probably be escorted out of the building. But I was confident craps would be my game. The only thing I knew going into a game of craps is that if you roll 2d6, the bell curve of probable results peaks at the number seven. What do you know, the clever people who invented the game of craps knew that too, and used it the their advantage. I would soon learn the most …

This week a stetson-wearing gambler teaches our geeky girl respect for poker.
The poker tables were bustling on my second visit to Harrah’s Casino. I waited until a grey haired man pushed away from one table in disgust, his hands empty of chips. I darted in to take his place. My pockets were full of twenty $1 chips and I had the shiny-doe eyed look of someone who didn’t have a clue of how badly she was about to be taken. The dealer ignored me and dealt to the rest of the table. A gaunt, middle-aged man in a cowboy hat put his arm around my shoulder. His breath was heavy with tobacco. He leaned in and asked, “Missy, have you got a clue in your head how to play this game?” “Kings are high,” I said. “Twos are low. You either want high numbers to match across different suits or you want the same high number in every …

With a recent lottery winner from Maryland Heights claiming their prize, residents are excited about Mega Millions.
Before Christmas, we reported to you that Maryland Heights resident Samuel Gardner won a nice lottery prize. Fast forward to now and everyone is talking about the Mega Millions jackpot, estimated to be at $355 million. That is a lot of dough! I am not usually a lottery player, but I couldn't resist buying a few tickets for the drawing. The saying goes, "you can't win if you don't play," so I am going to press my luck and see what happens. And I'm not the only Maryland Heights resident who is feeling the Mega Millions frenzy. "I play the lottery every week, and this week I bought extra tickets," said K. Hendricks, a Maryland Heights resident. "It would be neat if I could win. It would be a load off of my shoulders." With the economy in …

Midwest Petroleum lucky for customers playing the lottery.
Lots of people hope to become wealthy beyond measure, and for a Maryland Heights man, one scratchers ticket at a Hazelwood gas station helped him do just that. Network engineer Samuel Gardner, 53, purchased the winning lottery ticket at Midwest Petroleum located at 11902 Missouri Bottom Road. Assistant Store Manager Tiffany Akers said the store just has a lucky streak. "This is the second big win we've had," she said. "We've had some smaller ones to hit—we like to think that this is a pretty lucky store." Gardner won on the "$200,000 A Year For Life," a $10 Missouri Lottery scratchers ticket. A telephone call to Gardner went unanswered Thursday morning. Akers said a lot of people win $500 from scratchers at the store, as well as $1,000 …

Seven and eleven are pure unadulterated awesomeness if rolled on the "come out" roll, a.k.a. any time the "Off" button is out. It's once the point is established that seven is evil. Or, if you bet against the shooter by playing "Don't Pass," seven becomes your friend again after the come out roll. I agree that craps is fun. Usually craps dealers are friendly and helpful. It's against their best …   more ›
