Would More Bike Lanes Make Dorsett Road Better?

Maryland Heights is in the midst of a six-month study of ways to improve Dorsett Road with a $500,000 federal grant from St. Louis Great Streets Initiative. What do you think would make Dorsett Road a better roadway?

What makes a great street? According to Hilary Perkins, Maryland Heights' comprehensive planner, a great street is, "a place that you want to go. You're comfortable there in whatever mode you're traveling. Whether you're walking, running or in a car. It's a destination in itself—look at the Loop or Washington Avenue." Perkins and other officials in Maryland Heights are trying to tackle this issue with Dorsett Road, a road Perkins said is nothing to write home about but has potential to be destination roadway.  That's why in January, Maryland Heights embarked on a six-month study of ways to improve Dorsett Road with a $500,000 federal grant awarded through the St. Louis Great Streets Initiative.  The initiative was started in St. Louis by …

I live near the Dorsett and McKelvey Hill Drive (Wood Hollow and Cedar Trace) intersection. This is an incredibly dangerous spot with pedestrians running back and forth for bus stops and the constant battle to ever turn left from any direction or angle, on or off of Dorsett. There definitely needs to be a traffic light there, even if it is self directed by approaching traffic or pedestrian …   more ›

I agree with so many of the comments above. All my families basic shopping has to be done in every other city but Maryland Heights, it's ridiculous. We have one super crowded grocery store - that I avoid as much as I can. I think it's sad that we don't have any sense of community - we don't have a decent ice cream joint or a donut shop, the coffee shop is all the way over in Westport with no way …   more ›

Great Streets: City to Study Upgrades to Dorsett Road

Maryland Heights will examine ways to make Dorsett a more pedestrian and bike-friendly place.

For better or worse, if Maryland Heights had a "downtown Main Street" it would be Dorsett Road.  "Dorsett Road is not anything to write home about in terms of a great place to be," said Hilary Perkins, comprehensive planner for Maryland Heights.  But the city look at ways to turn Dorsett Road into a "Great Street." In January, Maryland Heights embarked on a six-month study of ways to improve Dorsett Road with a $500,000 federal grant awarded through the St. Louis Great Streets Initiative.  The initiative was started in St. Louis by East-West Gateway in 2006 as a way to help local communities think differently about creating interesting, lively streets that serve everyone in the area.  Perkins applied for the funding for the study and said …
