Rethinking Homework Starts With Parents

Dr. Cathy Vatterott, author of "Rethinking Homework," discusses how much work a child should do each night and how parents can talk to teachers about realistic, productive homework goals.

"The Homework Lady" thinks your kids are working too hard. Dr. Cathy Vatterott of Maryland Heights is an education professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and author of Rethinking Homework.  She was a middle school teacher and  principal before earning her PhD. Now she teaches future generations of middle school teachers how to educate their students best. "One of the courses I teach takes place at Parkway Middle School. We actually have middle school student panels come in so my teaching students can ask them questions," Vatterott said. "My students all intern and student teach at that level, so I still have a lot of connections with middle school students." She says two factors have conspired to create a detrimental homework …
