The Vikings had a nip and tuck game vs. the rival Colts Monday afternoon, with a birth in the district final on the line.
One hit. That's all it took for Parkway North to get what the Vikings needed to advance past Parkway Central in a district semifinal played at North Monday afternoon. With a man on in the first inning, Colt starter Brian Hillhouse struck out Parkway North's Jon Shanker, but Central could not complete the putout at first base when the ball escaped the cather. North's Garrett Taylor followed that up with a RBI double, the only Viking hit of the game, scoring two runs. An errant throw on a double play conversion plated a third run to back Sophomore starter Joey Reeves. He'd need every one of those runs as Hillhouse shut down the Vikings for the remainder of the game. Reeves worked out of jams throughout the game, except for a Zack Lazenby …

The Parkway North-Ladue baseball game was kind of like a 4th of July performance. While the North Vikings exploded like a bottle rocket, Ladue mostly fizzled like a cherry bomb with a bad fuse. “We really didn’t get anything going, this just wasn’t our day,” said Ladue’s coach Rob Garrett, trudging off the field after a 6-0 whitewash at the hands of the 16-3 Vikings. Ladue fell to 15-3. Sophomore lefty Joey Reeves went six innings and limited Ladue to just 4 scattered hits. The Vikings have been battled tested this year with two wins over Summit (last year’s state champs, winners over North in the title game); Parkway South, Parkway Central Troy (2 wins), Kirkwood, Hazelwood Central and Burroughs. Left-handed Joey Reeves kept Rams batters in check, scattering four hits over six frames.
At Parkway North, baseball is pretty much all in the family. The Vikings, a close-knit bunch muscled up for 8 hits and shut out the visiting Ladue Rams Monday, 6-0 on their home field. Left-handed, Joey Reeves, a sophomore with a 4-1 record and 2.75 ERA stymied Ladue batters scattering four hits before giving way to relief help in the top of the seventh. That pushes the Vikings record to 16-3, winners of the last 8 games. “We’re all Parkway North here,” said coach Fred Friedman, a 1998 Viking graduate. Friedman, and all the other coaches, Brett Katz, Mark Reeder, Mark Linn and JV coach Bob Bunton graduated from the school. The Vikings open the 2013 season ready to use last year's campaign as fuel for motivation.
Note: The doubleheader was postponed Wednesday, and could be played sometime next week. North has a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday at Parkway South. That was then. This is now. That seems to be the mindset for the 2013 edition of the Parkway North baseball team heading into Wednesday's season opener against the Parkway Central Colts. The Vikings have lost centerfielder Michael Bozarth and shortstop Connor Faron, two key cogs in the 2012 squad that got the school to within an inning of a state championship, but have plenty of returning pieces, including a trio of pitchers in Joe Hope, Joey Reeves and Connor Ladig to anchor the rotation. Joe Hope and Joey Reeves look forward to full season with the varsity squad after last season's meteoric rise and a ride to the state final four.
When Parkway North needed a boost last season, Head Coach Fred Friedman tapped a pair of pitchers who didn't start the year on varsity. Joe Hope and Joey Reeves came up from JV and pitched the Vikings on a magical run to the state final four in Springfield. All Hope, then a Sophomore (7-1, 3.40 ERA) did was shut out a Westminster Christian Academy team that's been the best in the state the past two seasons. He also threw a no-hitter in the state semifinal. Just a Freshman, Reeves (3-0, 1.58 ERA) was masterful in a state quarterfinal win over SLUH, before shoulder tendinitis and what was diagnosed as a stress fracture in his collarbone caught up with him in the state championship game against Rockwood Summit. The Vikings head out Friday morning for a state semifinal game against Willard (MO), and will go with Sophomore Joey Hope on the mound, leaving a Freshman in reserve to pitch a potential title game Saturday.
Just about every person in this country got the day off on Memorial Day Monday, and most of them spent it lounging around the pool, or possibly enjoying some barbeque in front of the TV, while pausing to remember the men and women of our Armed Forces who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. But for the members of the Parkway North baseball program, Monday was also a work day, and a tough one thanks to sweltering temperatures. But to a man, the Vikings players and coaches all agree that their 2012 Memorial Day couldn't have been spent any better, as they were preparing for a trip to Springfield this weekend for the State Baseball semifinals.
