A state constitutional amendment touted as a "right to pray" provision has won by better than a four-to-one margin. Proponents say Amendment 2 protects the right of Missourians to pray in public. Opponents of the measure say those protections are already guaranteed in the Bill of Rights and the amendment would be a boon for lawyers, who will battle in court over unintended consequences spawned by the provision. The re-election campaign of Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill has made headlines for a television ad strategy that goes after each of the three main Republican contenders in the GOP primary. Political observers have wondered aloud if the ad approach shines more favorably on U.S. Rep. Todd Akin in hopes that the Wildwood Republican emerges in Tuesday's election. Use of Marine Corps logo may be in violation of military trademark guidelines.
John Brunner's United States Senate campaign is taking a United States Marine Corps logo off a campaign bus after Creve Coeur Patch questioned if the logo may have been used in violation of Marine Corps trademark guidelines. Brunner served in the Marines as an Infantry Officer, rose to the rank of Captain, and leans on his military experience on the campaign stump and in advertising. John Brunner has spent a considerable amount of time and his own personal fortune, criss-crossing the state of Missouri and advertising his candidacy in the U.S. Senate primary. Now, with Tuesday's election fast-approaching, it's down to motivating volunteers to scratch for every vote, trying to make sure "Get Out The Vote" efforts are cranked up to get people to the polls. Two dozen GOP faithful showed up for a meeting Wednesday at the Maplewood Public Library sponsored by the Hadley Township Republicans. If the election were held today, political insiders in Missouri say U.S. Representative Todd Akin (R-Wildwood) would narrowly edge businessman John Brunner for their support for the Republican nomination to face U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill. That's the main finding of the inaugural Red Arch survey conducted by Missouri Patch sites. More than 50 influential Republicans, primarily from the St. Louis area, were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about a variety of questions relating to the U.S. Senate primary race. Thirty-three responses were collected. A majority (51.5 percent) of respondents said they would back Rep. Akin over Brunner (45.5 percent) if the election were held today. The publication reported Tuesday that the U.S. Senate candidate's company was late paying taxes on an aircraft.
Until now, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) had been the source of controversy this election cycle over well-documented problems with paying taxes on an aircraft. But Tuesday, citing information provided by a "Democratic operative" the website Politico reported that John Brunner (R-Frontenac) was late paying property taxes for a plane owned by his company, Vi-Jon Services. The three major Republican candidates for Missouri's U.S. Senate nomination will debate tonight at Washington University. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the debate will include U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, former Missouri Treasurer Sarah Steelman and businessman John Brunner. KMOV-TV is hosting the event. It will air on Channel 4 at 7 p.m. Akin, Steelman and Brunner are the frontrunners in an eight candidate race for the GOP nomination in the Aug. 7 primary. The winner will go up against incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in the Nov. 6 general election. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. at Washington University's Edison Theater.
