City Approves Funds to Buy Bus

Council members approved an increase in the city's budget to buy a new bus.

The Maryland Heights City Council approved an increase in the city’s general fund on Thursday. Council members voted to boost the fund by $9,500 so the Human Services program could buy a new bus through a grant from the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission. Council Approves City Employee Insurance Coverage

The Maryland Heights City Council approved health, dental, vision and life insurance plans for city employees.

City employees can get sick without worry. The Maryland Heights City Council renewed the city’s employee health insurance coverage with the St. Louis Area Insurance Trust (SLAIT) at its May 3 meeting. SLAIT expects a four percent rate increase for the next year. The City Council also accepted a proposal from Aetna Life Insurance Company to provide employee dental insurance beginning July 1. Previously city employees received dental benefits via Essex Dental—which, according to a memorandum from Director of Finance David Watson and Human Resource Manager Deborah Hamilton, does not write dental policies in Missouri any longer. Back in Action: City Council Returns to the Government Center

The incumbent candidates are sworn-in on Tuesday; next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday

The Maryland Heights City Council is set to make a return to work this week. The city's reorganization meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. The city council candidates who won the election earlier this month will be sworn in at the meeting. The next regular council meeting is set for Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. The city will hold both events at the Government Center.

Campaign Signs Flood Ward 2

Both Ward 2 city council candidates have posted campaign signs around neighborhoods.

The two candidates running for the Ward 2 city council spot this municipal election have each posted capaign signs around town. Incumbent Kim Baker and Planning and Zoning Commission member Howard Abrams are running for the seat. Election day is April 3.

Council Declares Portion of Maryland Heights as "Blighted"

The council voted for the measure at its March 1 meeting.

The Maryland Heights City Council declared a portion of the city as “blighted” at its March 1 meeting. Council members approved an ordinance declaring property along Fee Fee Road, Schuetz Road and Dorsett Road as blighted. The area runs from the intersection of Adie Road and Fee Fee Road to the Dorsett Road and Schuetz Road intersection— encompassing more than 70 acres. According to an analysis, conducted by the city, the area includes seven vacant areas, nine deteriorated buildings and 11 site deteriorations. The analysis notes the city hopes to redevelop the area to increase tax revenues. Update, 8:54 a.m.: Maryland Heights City Councilman Chuck Caverly confirmed World Wide Technologies and the Trades office/warehouse building were removed from the section of the city which could be designated as "blighted." City Council Passes Price Hike in Several Recreation Fees

The Maryland Heights City Council voted for several price increases for pavilion and Maryland Heights Centre room reservations.

Maryland Heights residents can expect a price jump if they hope to reserve a room at the Maryland Heights Centre or a pavilion. City council voted to increase the prices of reservations Thursday. Reservations for pavilions have increased $15 across the board, the bill indicates, except for nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits will continue to pay $20 to reserve a pavilion. Residents will pay $40, up from $25, the bill indicates. Most meeting rooms at the Maryland Heights Centre saw an increase of $25 per three-hour session. Maryland Heights City Council Amends Meeting Schedule, Approves Vehicle Purchases

The city council approved several items of legislation Thursday.

The Maryland Heights City Council approved a change to its meeting schedule at Thursday's meeting. The amendment removed language from the municipal code explaining the first Thursday in July and second Thursday in August were canceled. The amendment also added a section stating the city council can cancel a meeting at its discretion “in the event that there are no items of business for discussion.” All but one council member voted for the change. Ward 4 Councilman Norm Rhea voted against the bill. The council also passed five other items of legislation. The next city council meeting is scheduled for Feb. 2.

Abrams Decided Early On to Run for Maryland Heights City Council

Howard Abrams, a candidate for the Ward 2 City Council spot in the 2012 municipal election, said he has volunteered with the city for more than a decade.

Maryland Heights voters will cast their ballots for city council April 3. Residents in Ward 2 will have a choice between incumbent council member Kim Baker and planning and zoning commission member Howard Abrams. Both candidates filed to run on Dec. 13. Abrams said he decided early on to run in this election when he heard a rumor that Judy Barnett might not run for another term. Barnett died in February 2011. Kim Baker was appointed to fill the vacancy until the next election. After Baker’s appointment, Abrams continued to plan a run for the seat.
