The two candidates running for the Ward 2 city council spot this municipal election have each posted capaign signs around town. Incumbent Kim Baker and Planning and Zoning Commission member Howard Abrams are running for the seat. Election day is April 3.

Jan. 17 is the last day Maryland Heights residents can file for candidacy in the 2012 municipal election.
Tuesday, Jan. 17 is the final day to file for the 2012 Maryland Heights Municipal Election. The St. Louis County election calendar indicates filing will close at 5 p.m. As of Jan. 13, seven Maryland Heights residents had filed to run for city council spots. Incumbent Ken Gold, John Minton and Steve Leipziger will vie for the Ward 1 council seat. Incumbent Kim Baker and Howard Abrams will both run for the Ward 2 spot. Ward 3’s Chuck Caverly and Ward 4’s Jim Carver—both incumbent city council members—were the only candidates to file to run for their council seats as of Jan. 13. Election day is April 3.

City council member Jim Carver hopes to continue representing Ward 4 in the 2012-13 term.
Ward 4 is unlike any other ward in Maryland Heights, said the incumbent city council candidate who’s running to retain his spot on the council. Councilman Jim Carver was the only person who filed to run for the Ward 4 spot on city council on Dec. 13. The ward is filled with residents who care about their city, Carver said. It stretches from the river to east of McKelvey Road. The residents are some of the most vocal in local government and like to stay on top of things. Carver said he fields between 15 and 20 calls each week from concerned citizens. Incumbent city council member sees maintaining quality of homes and businesses an important issue for the city.
Empty storefronts and buildings in Maryland Heights are a significant issue for the city, said one incumbent city council member hoping for a second term. Chuck Caverly told Maryland Heights Patch that he is ready to run for office a second time. Caverly has spent the last two years representing Ward 3 on the Maryland Heights City Council. Caverly said the city has a lot of space that’s available for rent or lease for both businesses and people looking for homes. Councilwoman Kim Baker talks about her goals if she's elected to the Ward 2 City Council spot.
Election season may be just beginning, but one municipal race already has two candidates. Kim Baker and Howard Abrams filed to run for the Ward 2 Maryland Heights City Council spot on Dec. 13. Baker told Maryland Heights Patch that she has been proud to serve on the city council. “I love being part of the process,” she said. Baker was sworn in as councilwoman in March. Filing for the 2012 municipal elections started Tuesday morning, and five Maryland Heights residents have opted for candidacy. Only one seat, Ward 2, has more than one candidate on the first day. Incumbent Kim Baker has filed for to run for the position. Baker was appointed to represent Ward 2 on the city council in March after Councilwoman Judy Barnett died. Howard Abrams, who currently serves on the Maryland Heights Planning Commission, has also filed to run for the seat.
