It would be a return to the Parkway School district for Kashina Bell, who would replace Kim Brandon as principal of the Creve Coeur middle school.
Barring something unexpected at Wednesday night's Parkway School District Board of Education meeting, Kashina Bell will be officially hired as the next principal at Parkway Northeast Middle School. Parents and staff at the school learned of the news last week, according to district spokeswoman Cathy Kelly. The district has not announced the hire, but the information is part of Wednesday night's board meeting agenda. Bell is currently an Assistant Principal at Hazelwood East High School. Prior to that she was an Administrative Intern at Parkway Southwest Middle School and taught Math and Business at Parkway West High School. In January, Kim Brandon announced her retirement from Northeast, effective at the end of the school year, after 14 …

Parkway Northeast Middle School Principal Kim Brandon channeled her inner-Ray Lewis in making the announcement.
Several new principals will be gracing the halls of public and private schools in Creve Coeur beginning in August. Parkway Northeast Middle School Principal Dr. Kim Brandon shared the news with her staff last week. In a note to the school community that went out Monday, she quoted Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis, who announced his retirement effective at the end of the NFL season. "All things that start have an end.” After 14 years at the school, Brandon said the decision was bittersweet. "While I am excited about trying something new, I am sad about walking away from the one thing that has given my work purpose for the past 26 years—kids." Chaminade College Preparatory School will see a pair of principal changes. The school …

Sam Klein's work was profiled in the Sunday "Making A Difference" report.
Sam Klein may be the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to the "What I did over summer vacation" story when class resumes in August at Parkway Northeast Middle School. How many 12 year olds can say they were featured on a network news broadcast? Klein's passion for recycling led him to create his own company, resulting in money for charities while at the same time saving space in area landfills. That was enough to get NBC Nightly News interested in the backstory. Here's a link to the report, from NBC's Kevin Tibbles. We'll be checking in with our young philanthropist to see what kind of feedback the report has generated for his cause.

Members of Zero Conflict, the Northeast Middle School FOR (Friends of Rachel) club, are learning about the power of having a positive mental attitude (PMA). By Dr. Kim Brandon, principal of Parkway Northeast Middle School “Physical fitness is essential to health in people of all ages. Children who are physically active will have stronger muscles and bones and are less likely to become overweight than kids who have a more sedentary lifestyle.” (http://www.livestrong.com/article/344565-why-is-rest-exercise-important-for-children/#ixzz1tSLRqOat) Life, today, is very different than when I was growing up. My brother and I used to ride our bikes to our friends’ houses and play outside until it was dark. Today, with all the instances of child abductions, it is understandable why parents are less inclined to allow their children out of their sight. Television didn’t offer much more than three basic …

If someone handed you a brick and asked how you would use it, what would be your response? One response might be that you would use it for building something. Another response might be that you would use it as a doorstop, or you might even say you would use it as a paperweight. How we use the brick determines its purpose. This is the same for assessments. How they are used determines their purpose (e.g., either formative or summative). The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. In other words, formative assessment is assessment FOR learning. Formative assessment is considered practice; …

Merna Youssef will be honored Dec. 10 by the St. Louis Coalition of Human Rights.
"Freedom from bullying is a human right. It is a human right because everyone is equal no matter what. It is also a human right because no one has to fit in or be like others to be treated the same way." You probably won't find these words in a universal treatise on human rights anywhere. At least not yet. But Parkway Northeast Middle School 8th grade student Merna Youssef is well on her way. Youssef, 13, has been recognized by the St. Louis Coalition of Human Rights as the first place winner of the Missouri Human Rights Essay Contest. Entitled, "How Does Bullying Affect the Right to Personal Security?" Youssef describes a narrative in her essay that spans generations and even continents. Her family arrived from Egypt when she was nine …
