As the school year draws to a close, so do the careers of many dedicated educators.
Several Pattonville teachers, faculty and staff will be saying their goodbyes at the end of this school year as 35 people prepare to retire. The Pattonville School District honored and celebrated these workers and “family members” years of service earlier this week. Here’s a rundown of those retiring at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Administrators, officials give students something serious to think about for Friday's prom.
Pattonville High School juniors and seniors looked onto a car accident on the school’s lot Thursday morning as firefighters and police attempted to secure and clear the scene. But the accident was all for show. The school, Pattonville Fire District, SSM-Depaul Health Center and Maryland Heights Police Department organized a “docudrama” for students as a part of Operation Safe Prom. Pattonville’s prom will be held Friday night at Westport Sheraton. “We want you to have a safe prom,” Pattonville physical education teacher and docudrama coordinator Rich Beckmann announced to students prior to the start of the event. “You have to make responsible decisions on a night that should be exciting and filled with many memories.” Operation Safe Prom …

Pattonville High School, located in Maryland Heights, was rated in the U.S. News and World Report's 2013 Best High Schools Ranking List as being one of the top 20 in Missouri and in the top 10 percent nationally.
Pattonville High School is one of the top 20 high schools in Missouri and in the top 10 percent of the entire country, according to ranking in "U.S. News and World Report." The Maryland Heights-based high school ranked No. 19 in Missouri of "U.S. News and World Report's 2013 Best High Schools Ranking List," which was released Tuesday. The school also ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in high schools, at a ranking of 1,941. The new state pilot program will provide $1.3 million in funding to area school districts, including $500,000 to Pattonville High School.
Gov. Jay Nixon sparked energy and excitement in Pattonville High School students, teachers and faculty Monday morning as he spoke during the visit to the school for the Innovation High School Program. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education tapped Pattonville for a $500,000 grant as a part of the program Ferguson-Florissant and St. Louis Public School districts also received grant funding to participate in the pilot program. The annual run/walk will take place at Pattonville High School.
For those runners and walkers, the 24th annual Pattonville 5K run/walk will be the perfect opportunity to stretch those limbs and hopefully enjoy some spring weather. The 5K will be held at Pattonville High School, April 27. The race will also feature a one-mile fun run. The race has nine age divisions, starting at the age of 5 and going past the age of 60, while the fun run goes from preschool to eighth grade. Trophies will be given to the male and female top finishers as well as the top three age division finishers. The fun run will have gold, silver and bronze medals for each grade section determined by time. Registration for individuals is $10 and then determined by a family rate. Students recently received accolades in the Sponsors of School Publication Conference, Missouri Interscholastic Press Association.
The future of journalism looks promising in the Pattonville School District as a number of students and the school newspaper, yearbook and online publication took home regional and state awards recently. The Pirate Press, ECHO yearbook and PattonvilleTODAY each earned high awards at two conferences recently as did a number of students. “I think being recognized at a city and state level builds up confidence in students and encourages them to try new things,” Brian Heyman, Pattonville English and Journalism teacher as well as the students’ advisor, said. “I hope my students take what they learned during the conferences and continue to improve their work in the future.” Pirate Press earned Honorable mention for overall newspaper at the …

Jack Koester graduated for Pattonville in 1995 and argued that blood tests could be taken from suspected drunk or impaired drivers without a court order.
The United States Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that law enforcement authorities need court warrants to take blood samples in suspected impaired driving cases, The Kansas City Star reported. The decision is a defeat for a Pattonville High School graduate Jack Koester, who argued in favor of the measure as an Assistant Cape Girardeau County Prosecutor. According to the Star, "The Supreme Court held that police usually must try to obtain a search warrant from a judge before ordering blood tests for drunken driving suspects." "I practiced as often as I could," Koester told The Southeast Missourian after he argued the case in January. "You think you're about as ready as you're going to be and it's still just a very daunting experience."

The school hopes to raise as much as $1,000 to benefit the Senior All-Night Graduation Party.
With graduation season quickly approaching, Pattonville High School is getting prepared for graduation night with its annual fundraiser. Saturday, the high school will host a community garage sale, which will benefit the Senior All-Night Graduation Party. The Senior All-Night Graduation Party serves as a safe, drug/alcohol-free celebration for students, immediately following graduation. Pattonville Assistant Principal Jon Fitzgerald said that the school currently has more than 20 vendors for the garage sale. It says the goal for this year is to collect between $800 and $1,000. The garage sale will take place Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Pattonville High School. The high school graduation is scheduled for May 30.

Pattonville High School graduate Melissa Marlette is in the process of creating a short film entitled "Sacrifice" that will center on a prison of war who finds an opportunity to escape.
Melissa Marlette, a 1999 graduate of Pattonville High School and now Hollywood-based writer and director, has successfully secured enough funding online to move forward with her latest movie project, a short film entitled "Sacrifice" about a prisoner of war who finds an opportunity to escape. Marlette, who grew up in the St. Louis-area, used the social funding platform Kickstarter to raise more than $30,000 to produce the film. That money will go toward funding things such as cast and crew, equipment rentals, location permits, post productionand festival fees.
