The Pattonville School District Board of Education approved several changes to its 2012-13 budget. Despite an increase in revenue and spending, the budget remains on target as predicted.
The Pattonville Board of Education approved changes to its 2012-2013 budget that didn’t spell good or bad news necessarily. The district saw an increase of $4.1 million in revenue as well as an increase of $1.2 million in spending, according to district documents. The district remains on target as expected with its budget, Chief Financial Officer Richard Orr said. Orr said the budget modifications are to show the district’s accounting measures as the fiscal year winds down. The $4.1 million revenue bump comes from appraised property value of Hollywood Casino, formerly Harrah’s Casino. Orr said the district didn’t know the approximate values so it was left out of the budget. St. Louis County Assessor Jake Zimmerman valued the casino at $439…

As the school year draws to a close, so do the careers of many dedicated educators.
Several Pattonville teachers, faculty and staff will be saying their goodbyes at the end of this school year as 35 people prepare to retire. The Pattonville School District honored and celebrated these workers and “family members” years of service earlier this week. Here’s a rundown of those retiring at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. After honoring several district teacher and staff member of the year nominees during last month’s board meeting, the Pattonville School District has announced the finalists for both categories. Julie Linck, John Sepanski and Beth Moritz are the finalists for the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year honor. Linck is a third-grade teacher at Remington, Sepanski is a math teacher at Pattonville Heights Middle School, and Moritz is an English Teacher at Pattonville High School. Kathy Albers, a parent educator in Parents as Teachers; Larrie Bell, a Holman Middle School paraprofessional; and Van Huynh, a custodian at Pattonville High School are finalists for the Support Staff of the Year honor. The Missouri Department of Education will host one of eight statewide meetings in North County.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will host a number of statewide informational meetings on the state’s Common Core Standards, which includes a site in North St. Louis County. The Hazelwood School District will serve as a site for one of eight statewide meetings regarding the standards Thursday evening. The Common Core Standards are a part of a nationwide initiative to have a set of clearly defined educational standards in language arts and math for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Missouri is one of 45 states to adopt the standards. Hazelwood School District serves as the closest site to Pattonville school districts. The board heard a short presentation and quickly gave OK to updating the safety procedures.
The Pattonville Board of Education approved its safety evaluation for 2013. Pattonville’s Director of Facilities David Winslow presented the evaluation and hit specifically on the highlights. The board considered three recommendations in moving forward with the program, including continue district building inspections using plain clothes police officers, finish installation of security cameras, which was a part of the 2010 bond issue and review and update procedures for building emergency response teams. Winslow said that custodial staff had been trained in CPR and use of automated external defibrillator (AED) this past year and the use of plain-clothes police officers in buildings for random inspections proved to be a big success. The new state pilot program will provide $1.3 million in funding to area school districts, including $500,000 to Pattonville High School.
Gov. Jay Nixon sparked energy and excitement in Pattonville High School students, teachers and faculty Monday morning as he spoke during the visit to the school for the Innovation High School Program. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education tapped Pattonville for a $500,000 grant as a part of the program Ferguson-Florissant and St. Louis Public School districts also received grant funding to participate in the pilot program. The Pattonville School Board will receive a review of the annual safety evaluation plan Tuesday night at its board meeting. The annual run/walk will take place at Pattonville High School.
For those runners and walkers, the 24th annual Pattonville 5K run/walk will be the perfect opportunity to stretch those limbs and hopefully enjoy some spring weather. The 5K will be held at Pattonville High School, April 27. The race will also feature a one-mile fun run. The race has nine age divisions, starting at the age of 5 and going past the age of 60, while the fun run goes from preschool to eighth grade. Trophies will be given to the male and female top finishers as well as the top three age division finishers. The fun run will have gold, silver and bronze medals for each grade section determined by time. Registration for individuals is $10 and then determined by a family rate. The school raised $26,000 this year and wants to spread the wealth to the rest of Pattonville.
Although Bridgeway Elementary students, teachers and parents banded together recently to shave their heads and raise money for a cancer organization, the school hopes to do it again – and bigger. During the Pattonville Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Bridgeway kindergarten teacher Kim Heumann informed the board that the school hopes to make it a district-wide event next year. “It’s the most amazing thing since I had my children,” she said. “We want everyone to have the opportunity to share this amazing opportunity.” She said that the teachers and administrators who organized it hope to speak to Superintendent Mike Fulton about the possibility for next year.
