Should The New Mississippi River Bridge Be Named After Stan Musial?

A KMOX petition campaign is gaining steam and prominent Missouri State Senators are backing the idea with legislation.

In the days since Stan Musial passed away Saturday night, tributes have poured in from around St. Louis, the baseball world and beyond. Everyone, it seems, has a Stan Musial story. He may already have a statue outside Busch Stadium, but something even bigger could be on the way. KMOX Radio has started a petition campaign urging the Governors of Missouri and Illiniois to name new bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Musial's honor. KMOX reports the bridge will be finished next year. Late Tuesday afternoon, State Senators John Lamping (R-Ladue) and Eric Schmidt (R-Glendale) confirmed that they had filed legislation on the issue. Lawmakers in both Missouri and Illinois must agree on the official name of th bridge. Visitation for Musial, …

What Do You Remember About Stan 'The Man' Musial?

Everyone's got a story about the St. Louis Cardinals' legend, right? Musial died Saturday.

Stan "The Man" Musial, the St. Louis Cardinals legend who was widely considered "the greatest Cardinal," died on Saturday. That's the news that broke on Saturday. Today, we're interested in your stories about the pitcher-cum-outfielder who played for the Redbirds from 1941 to 1963. As a relatively newcomer to St. Louis (only here 11 years!) I can't say I have a lot of memories of Musial beyond meeting countless compatriots at the Musial statue at the last two versions of Busch Stadium. How about you? What do you remember about Musial? Your parents' memories? Yours?

I am a former TWA flight attendant and was fortunate enough to have STAN THE MAN on a short flight one day. He came prepared to sign autographs for anyone who wanted one....always accomodating. As a crew menber, I hesitated to invade his privacy but I just couldn't help myself on this occasion so I produced my son, Dan's, little league card. Without skipping a beat, Stan wrote "To Dan the Man …   more ›

Stan was my boyhood hero since about the mid 1950's. He was so highly respected as a person that I tried to pattern my life after him, and I think I became a better person for having had him as someone I idolized and wanted to be like. He and my father and mother were all born in the same year (1920) and they were all heroes to me. I am feeling very sad this morning.   more ›

Stan 'The Man' Musial Dead At Age 92

The St. Louis Cardinal icon and baseball hall of fame outfielder passed away Saturday night.

Stan Musial, a giant in the St. Louis community and the baseball world for more than half a century, died Saturday at his home in Ladue.  "Stan the Man passed peacefully at home at 5:45 pm tonight of natural causes. Life will never be the same without baseball's perfect knight," his grandson, Brian Musial Schwarze said via Twitter Saturday evening. Musial was 92 and had been in poor health in recent years. Musial, who entered baseball's Hall of Fame in 1969, played 22 years for the St. Louis Cardinals, amassing 3,630 hits and 24 All-Star Game appearances in a career full of superlatives. Said the Cardinals in posting word of Musial's death: Musial, father of three daughters and a son, was unpretentious, untroubled, friendly and folksy. The…

St. Louis Cardinals Season Ends in San Francisco

The Giants beat the Cardinals 9-0 in Game 7 to end the Redbirds' 2012 season.

There will be no World Series in St. Louis this season.  There will be no parade down Market Street, no 12th world championship and no rematch of the 2006 Fall Classic. Monday night in San Francisco the Cardinals hopes of a repeat of 2011 were ended at the hands of the Giants.  Just like in 1996, the Cardinals, with a new manager, had a 3-1 lead in the National League Championship series. And, just like in '96, the Cards failed to get win No. 4, losing in Game 7 in a blowout.  The Cardinals were done in by a series of miscues and the inability to get a big basehit. But, credit the San Francisco, the Giants had to play perfect to come back and did just that.  The loss in California closes the book on an interesting season for the Cardinals…
