Flicking Footballs Brings Cash, White Castle Sliders to NFFL Winners

Maryland Heights White Castle hosts a regional National Finger Football League tournament with $2,500 for the national winner.

Jeff Fitzgerald will get a chance to play in Indianapolis during Super Bowl week. That’s more than the Peyton Manning-less Indianapolis Colts are likely to be able to say. Of course, Fitzgerald, of Fenton, will be playing for the National Finger Football League (NFFL) tournament sponsored by White Castle, not the Lombardi Trophy. He’s going to the national tournament after defeating Dan Diering of Maryland Heights, 19-6, in the St. Louis area tournament final game Saturday at the Maryland Heights White Castle on Dorsett Road. Now, he’ll travel to Indianapolis to play winners of tournaments in Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minneapolis and other cities. “I was really surprised I won,” said Fitzgerald. “It was the first time I’d ever played …

White Castle Trivia: How Well Do You Know the Home of the Slider?

Where was the first White Castle? How long has White Castle been in St. Louis? What makes you crave them so much? OK, that last one isn't trivia.

Some couples celebrate anniversaries or Valentine's Day there because they met or had their first date at White Castle. My dad used to take my mom to the one on North Kingshighway in St. Louis city when they were dating. There's a lot of history between those white porcelain walls—although newer White Castles are stone-colored. Take our White Castle quiz and see how much you know about the home of the slider. Each photo has a trivia question about the home of the slider. For answers, see the last photo caption. Information for the questions came from the timeline on the White Castle website.         Answers* Harold: "The feeling that comes over a man when he gets exactly what he desires. I need that feeling!" Kumar: "Are you saying what I …

Chain Gang

White Castle's Chicken Rings are a Guilty Pleasure

Our restaurant reviewer abandons white tablecloths for a blue plastic tray covered in America's favorite hangover cure.

I have guilty secret to confess. I actually like White Castle French Fries. There. I said it. If restaurant reviewers had a union, I’d now be cast out. I only see crinkle cut fries in three places: White Castle, middle school cafeterias and the occasional hole in the wall Indian restaurant that sneaks them into my curry alongside a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. This should make for some odd mental associations, but White Castle’s fries are hopelessly, wholesomely retro. They look like something Don Draper would serve his kids while Betty is off horseback riding. Somehow, even when I’m stone cold sober, White Castle’s crinkle cut fries always have a fluffy white interior and just the right springy resistance as my teeth sink in. A lot of …
