Odor From Bridgeton Landfill Not Dangerous, Officials Say
Smell caused by smoldering at the Bridgeton Landfill is not dangerous. However, Republic Services says its still working to rid the area of the foul odor.
That foul odor you're smelling when you drive near the Interstate 270 and Interstate 70? That's about all it is—smelly. And it's likely to linger the next several months. According to a report issued by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the smell coming from the Bridgeton Landfill is not dangerous. The odor, the report says, is actually caused by a break in a leachate line and construction activity at the landfill planned to reduce or eliminate future odors. To address the issue, Bridgeton developed a nine-week plan—roughly February through May—where residents and businesses in the area surrounding Bridgeton would likely notice periodic spikes in odors as these construction activities occur.
