Pattonville High School has a similar program. Through the PHS health occupations class, students observe medical procedures and operations at DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton and also participate in hands-on duties at Delmar Gardens, taking vital signs and extending personal care for the residents of the nursing/rehabilitation center. They spend classroom time with a registered nurse on staff at PHS, preparing for in-field observations and hands-on work. The program is a year-long course that introduces juniors and seniors to various careers in healthcare. They are taught a certified nurse assistant (CNA) curriculum, and after successfully completing the course and a final exam, students receive both CNA and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification. They can also earn four hours of articulated college credit through St. Louis Community College or two hours of dual college credit through the Missouri State University system.

Here are two that we heard of just recently:

Gabe Lozano, Class of 2001, was featured in a May 20 business story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about his social media company, Lockerdome. Lozano is Lockerdome's chief executive officer. The company recently moved into a Washington Avenue storefront in downtown St. Louis and its 12 employees is expected to expand to 25 by December. According to the article, "Lockerdome's vision is to build a worldwide social network focused on sports. Just as people use Facebook for their social lives and LinkedIn to create a business persona, athletes and fans need a place to organize around sports." The article went on to say, "Lockerdome... may be the tech startup that puts St. Louis on the map for Silicon Valley's venture capitalists."

Dr. Molly Ramsey-Durham, Class of 2000, was selected to receive the Springfield Business Journal's Top 40 Under 40 Award. A panel of independent judges chose the 40 up-and-coming professionals based on their professional and community accomplishments. Ramsey-Durham, a veterinarian, launched the 1,900 square-foot Nixa Animal Hospital in July 2011. She earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She previously worked as associate veterinarian at Galloway Village Veterinary Hospital in southern Springfield and is active in several rescue groups including the Killuminati Foundation, which raises money for dogs’ medical care.

Pattonville High School will conduct the bulk of its college/career readiness testing on one day, Oct. 11, as part of its new Pirate Connections program. (Pirate Connections is an advisory program that encourages a connection between each student and a caring teacher to help students better understand themselves, their strengths, and to plan for their future.) Sophomores will take the PLAN, freshmen will take the EXPLORE and juniors will take a practice ACT. These are part of a sequence of ACT-related assessments that provide students with valuable testing experience and teachers with feedback necessary to make adjustments to instruction so that when students take the ACT as juniors or seniors they are prepared to perform at a high level. At the same time on Oct. 11, PHS seniors will participate in a panel discussion about college life, have the opportunity to visit local two-year colleges and/or attend presentations from four-year universities.
